Salesforce.com Tip of the Day – Advanced Search – Using Wildcards and Boolean

Our Salesforce.com Tip of the Day is on Advanced Search – Using Wildcards and Boolean when using Global Search. We have already covered basics of Search in Salesforce.com in a previous Salesforce.com tip posted earlier:

How to use Global Search in Salesforce.com

In this article we will explore the advanced search.

(1) Using Wildcard Character - asterisk (*)

To conduct a partial word search, you can type an asterisk (*) wildcard at the end (or in the middle) of your search term, or choose the auto-complete option with an asterisk from the search box drop-down list.

Using wildcard chars

(2) Asterisks can only be used at the end or in the middle (not at the beginning)

Wildcard at the start will not work

Asterisks match zero or more characters at the middle or end (not the beginning) of your search term. For example, a search for jon* finds items that start with jon, such as, jone, jones, or Jonas. A search for “Jo* Lim” finds items with Jonas Lim or John Lim.

Using wildcard chars in the middle

(3) Apart from Asterisk you need to enter two or more characters

Your search term must have two or more characters. The special characters, such as * aren’t included in the character count.

(4) Using Boolean Operators

You can refine your search using operators such as AND, OR, and AND NOT. You can use any combination of AND, OR and AND NOT in your search term:

Boolean

  • OR – To get results where ANY ONE of your terms will appear in the record. For example, John OR Jone will give results on all the records where either John or Jones is appearing.
  • AND –  To get results where ALL of your terms will appear in the record. For example, John AND Jone will give results on all the records where both John and Jones are appearing together.
  • AND NOT - To get results where one of your terms is excluded in the record. For example, John AND NOT Jone will give results on all the records where John is appearing and both John and Jones are NOT appearing together.

There is more about search that we will be learning later. For now, play with Boolean and Wildcards when doing your next search in Salesforce.com

    Hi,

In https://www.dhruvsoft.com/blog/salesforce-com-tip-of-the-day-advanced-search-using-wildcards-and-boolean/ you are using “Asterix” for the word “Asterisk”. “Asterix is a comic book character, the symbol “*” is an asterisk.
    Thanks
